I have been listening to a lot of Chris Cornell lately. If you don't know who Chris Cornell is (and just crawled to a computer from that rock you've been under), he is a vocalist who grew up in Seattle and was very instrumental in the music boom in the early 90's. His former bands include Temple of the Dog, Soundgarden, and Audioslave, and he is now touring to promote his 2nd solo album.

I honestly never really knew who he was until I heard Audioslave's first album, "Audioslave". I was blown away by the power of his singing and his great upper range. Right away I knew I wanted to hear his other work. I was friends with several older fans that really loved his previous band, Soundgarden, and they had me listen to all of their CDs so I could get acquainted with where "the voice" came from. I did like it, but the catchy riffs and unique guitar work of Audioslave quickly became my favorite.

Even now, in his older age, Cornell still has something to say and his voice, although diminished, has a gritty appeal that makes it hard not to listen. The setlists of his current tour consist of all his previous ventures. From the classic "Hunger Strike", to several acoustic versions of Soundgarden tunes, to his latest commercial success "You Know My Name", he really does it all. I have not yet had the experience of seeing him perform live but I've promised myself that I will...whenever he comes back to his hometown.

Nice work Jamie, keep it up! And keep playing music. Like yourself I have many musical tastes, and the music I make is also greatly impacted by the various artists I listen to. Keep me updated on these blogs,

-Jake

I honestly believe my life would not be the same, surely not as joyful, without local Anacortes band Spoonshine.

Check them out at Spoonshine.com.

I actually found a Spoonshine cd.  Found it.  On the ground.  I took it home and was surprised to see that they are local.  I am after all a huge supporter of local music.  I put it in my cd player and was blown away.  I too recommend checking them out.

You say you’re a guitarist that has dabbled in many genres, and can sing a bit too. I need versitile, killer lead guitarists for a band I’m trying to put together to be the backup for a theatrical stage show I’m working on.

Chris Cornell??? Are you kidding? Let’s talk about somebody who is truly relevant to our community and who is more so than Anacortes’ own Mount Eerie.  Mount Eerie aka The Microphones aka Phil Elverum is a musical savant.  His sound booms every bit of the beauty in which he is named for.  His songs are increasingly becoming more dark and mysterious and after nine years of seeing him wallow like Phil he is my number one favorite player to listen too.  Go see for yourselves… http://pwelverumandsun.com/

Thanks for the post. I’ve never heard of Phil Elverum until now. I looked up some of his music and it sounds pretty good! It reminds me of Radiohead and their experimental style. Also, I thought I would mention that my blogs will be about bands and musicians from all over the place, not just locally. Feel free to post more comments regarding other local talent like Phil Elverum though!

haha.  I met someone from out of state, when he found out that I was from Skagit County he was all excited that I was around Phil Elverum.  I honestly never heard of him and it seems that he has a huge fan base out of the area but not too well known in the area.

Personally I think everyone should go see Barefeet - they are local from upriver I think.  Saw one show over in Anacortes… think they are playing up in Rockport over the weekend.  Should check them out!

Has anyone heard of White Trash Compactor?  I’m not sure if they still play shows but I saw them at SCUMfest @the moose lodge a couple years back and they were super cool.  Check those guys out if you want your socks rocked!
