The city of Sedro-Woolley was awarded a $105,000 grant from the Department of Ecology to launch composting programs. It has done so in three schools and a bakery so far, according to Jennifer Carter’s article in Wednesday's Skagit Valley Herald about a Sedro-Woolley student running a recycling program in the school cafeteria. (See the story on goskagit).
Kudos to senior Luci Miner, who is leading the charge to make Sedro-Woolley High School more green through a cafeteria recycling and composting center, sponsored by the city through the grant.
Through her and the city’s efforts, Skagit County students are learning the very real lesson of what they personally can do to make the world a better place.
Another bonus? According to city Solid Waste Supervisor Leo Jacobs, as reported in the story, getting rid of garbage costs $82 per ton, but getting rid of compostable food waste only costs $30 per ton.
So let’s do the math: A cleaner environment plus student participation/learning plus saving money equals a solid example for other Skagit County cities to follow.
