Ahhhh, a breath of fresh air has swept over Skagit County's theater arts landscape, along with fishnets, wild hair and makeup, a campy storyline and a fair share of raunch.
It's about time.
Theater Arts Guild is going out on a limb and veering away from its traditional family fare with its upcoming production of "The Rocky Horror Show." Rumor is that the TAG Board of Directors tussled for quite a while over whether to take the group in a new direction and start providing entertainment to a broader audience base. Originally, the group — a mix of kids and adults — was set up to provide young actors with opportunities that didn't exist when the group was founded. But now it seems the group has grown up a bit, as has the appetite of the audience that it's trying to reach. Board members say they aren't abandoning their original goal, but enhancing it by reaching a wider audience.
I love the big classics as much as anyone. "Oliver!" always is a holiday treat, and who can say no to "A Christmas Carol?" But wouldn't it be nice to see something a little challenging; something a little more contemporary and edgy once in a while? I think there's an audience base out there that might roll its eyes at another "Oliver!" production, but gladly pay $15 a ticket to see a rollicking "Rocky Horror."
