Crawford is Kiwanis student of the month
On March 27, the Anacortes Noon Kiwanis Club honored Eileen Crawford as the Anacortes High School Kiwanis student of the month for January for her exceptional effort in foreign language. Her mother, Kathleen Crawford, also attended the luncheon.
Crawford was selected by the teachers in the foreign language department for her exceptional progress in French throughout her high school career. She has been to France with the French Travel Club and has tutored students in French I.
Crawford, a senior, spoke to the Kiwanians about her future plans. She has been accepted to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and is waiting to hear from the U.S. Naval Academy.
Wendt named to EWU dean’s list
Lorene Wendt was named to the Eastern Washington University dean’s list for winter quarter 2008. To be listed undergraduate students must earn 12 quality hours and have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.
Glein named to Pepperdine dean’s list
Pepperdine University student Kelsey Glein of Anacortes was named to the Seaver College dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester. Seaver College, located in Malibu, Calif., is the undergraduate school for Pepperdine.
To be listed, students must be in the upper 10 percent of their class and maintain a 3.5 or better grade-point average.
Idczak named Kiwanis student of the month
On April 3, the Anacortes Noon Kiwanis Club honored Sarah Idczak as the Anacortes High School Kiwanis student of the month for November for exceptional effort in science. Her mother, Joanna Idczak, also attended the luncheon.
She was recognized by her nominating teacher for going above and beyond the rigors of the coursework in environmental science. In addition to bringing in extra materials on alternative energy sources, she attends seminars on class topics outside of school. She is involved in school and community activities and has a 4.0 grade-point average. Idczak plans to attend Western Washington University.
Six students named to CWU honor roll
Six Anacortes students were named to Central Washington University’s winter quarter 2008 honor roll: Paige Baglien, Chelsea Bodding, Kelsey Brazas, Owen Forsman, Luke Irving and Ross Woods.
Central undergraduate students who earn a 3.5 or better grade-point average while carrying at least 12 graded credit hours of study are eligible for the honor roll.
Birkeland is Kiwanis student of the month
On April 17, the Anacortes Noon Kiwanis Club honored Kenneth Birkeland as the Anacortes High School Kiwanis student of the month for December for exceptional effort and leadership in P.E. His grandmother, Alice Schreder, attended the luncheon with him.
Birkeland was recognized for his great work ethic, encouraging his fellow classmates and leadership skills. He has been involved in football (MVP award), track and baseball and on the honor roll for all four years.
He has a part-time job and his hobbies and interests revolve around fishing, hunting and sports. He is aiming for a technical education after high school.
Taylor earns scholarships at WSU
Christopher Taylor was awarded a $1,000 Glenn A. Johnson Scholarship and a $1,500 Washington State Association of Broadcasters Scholarship at Washington State University. Taylor is a 2005 Anacortes High School graduate and anticipates graduating from WSU with a degree in communication in May 2009.
He is the son of Peggy Gray from Quincy.
Reed earns two scholarships at WSU
Caitlin Reed was awarded a $1,000 College of Engineering Scholarship and a $5,000 University Achievement Award at Washington State University. Reed will graduate from Anacortes High School in June 2008 and plans to begin classes at WSU this fall. She anticipates graduating from WSU with a degree in bioengineering in May 2012.
She is the daughter of Jenny and Rodney Reed of Anacortes.
UW students named to winter dean’s list
Fourteen Anacortes students were named to the University of Washington dean’s list for winter quarter: Darin Allen, Ethan Apter, Sarah Brown, Marie Clifford, Sean Groda, Greg Hsu, Charity Johnson, Misa Mattson, Cameron McCool, Matthew Joseph, Brett Robison, Saba Samadani, Nathan Smitha and Matthew Toth.
To qualify, a student must have completed at least 12 graded credits and have a grade-point average of at least 3.5.
Students recognized for outstanding abilities
Local students Che Adams, Ross Atterberry, Cameron Burgess, Justin Constanza, Sean Folks Weech, Lucas Gordon, Nicholas Papadakis, Clary Petitclerc, Campbell Torres and Hunter Wiekman are some of nearly 1,100 fifth- through eighth-graders from around the state who will be honored for their outstanding verbal or math abilities by the University of Washington at an award recognition ceremony May 18.
The students’ academic achievements were found through the Washington Search for Young Scholars. To be eligible for the awards, fifth and sixth grade students had to score in the upper 3 percent in the reading/verbal or math/quantitative sections on a recent standardized test, including the Washington Assessment of Student Learning. Seventh and eighth grade students were required to take either the SAT or ACT and score above the mean for college-bound high school students.
Gould named Soroptimist student of the month
Sarai Gould, an eighth-grader at Anacortes Middle School, was named the Soroptimist International of Anacortes student of the month for April. She is the daughter of Sheri Muntean of Anacortes.
Bessler named Kiwanis student of the month
The Anacortes Sunrisers Kiwanis honored Amanda Bessler as its April student of the month. She is a student at Anacortes Middle School and was selected for her academic and sports achievements.
She is the daughter of Kevin and Michelle Bessler of Anacortes.
