EarthCorps leader honored by Trust

Luci Miner and the Sedro-Woolley EarthCorps have been named to receive Skagit Land Trust’s annual Stewardship Award.

The award is given in recognition of a Trust volunteer’s contributions to stewardship activities. It will be presented March 21 during the Trust’s annual meeting.

Miner, president of EarthCorps, started a waste-reduction and composting project. She enlisted all the schools in the city of Sedro-Woolley to participate in the effort to recycle food waste for compost.

The Trust said Miner showed exceptional leadership and EarthCorp demonstrated enthusiasm and dedication to its mission and work.

Two contestants vie for Dairy Ambassador

Shelby Hansen, 19, and Michelle Wesen, 16, are competing for the title of Skagit Island Dairy Ambassador.

One of the two candidates will be crowned Monday, April 7, during the Skagit Island Dairy Ambassador Coronation Banquet. Contestants must be involved in a dairy program (FFA, 4-H, etc.), work on a dairy, or be a member of a family actively engaged in the dairy industry.

Hansen is the daughter of dairy farmers Herb and Judy Hansen of Sedro-Woolley. She graduated from Sedro-Woolley High School and attends Pacific Lutheran University.
Wesen is the daughter of dairy farmers Richard and Shaun Wesen of Bow. She is a junior at Burlington-Edison High School.

The coronation festivities begin at 7 p.m. on April 7 at the Best Western CottonTree Inn Convention Center in Mount Vernon. Tickets cost $20 and must be purchased by April 1. Call Vickie Mesman at 360-466-3412.

The county ambassador will represent the local dairy industry at various functions in the coming year. She will be eligible to compete in next year’s Washington State Dairy Ambassador Contest.

Red Cross seeks ‘Heroes’ nominations

Nominations for “Real Heroes” — ordinary people who have done extraordinary things — are being accepted until April 10 by the Anacortes/ San Juan Islands Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Mayor’s Youth Achievement Award

The city of Burlington is seeking nominations for the Mayor’s Youth Achievement Award.

Burlington youth ages 11 to 14 who are dedicated to utilizing their talents, helping others, or who have overcome obstacles to accomplish their goals are eligible.

Society to offer $5 cat neutering

The Humane Society of Skagit Valley wants to prevent a springtime overflow of kittens at its already full shelter.

A $5 Cat Neuter Day for male cats is scheduled March 20 at College Way Animal Hospital to help pet owners prevent unwanted litters of kittens.
Male cats must be preregistered for the low-cost procedure.
