Guidelines for writing letters to the editor

Goskagit.com welcomes letters to the editor addressing current issues in the public arena, in the author's own words. Acceptable letters will be published in the Skagit Valley Herald as space allows; published letters may also appear on the goskagit.com Web site.

Please keep letters to a maximum length of 300 words. We also edit letters for appropriate language, clarity, accuracy and to avoid libel.

We encourage originality of thought and purpose -- no form letters, or letters generated by an interest group campaign, will be accepted or published online or in our print publications.

Letters may not include links to other Web sites or lengthy references to outside material -- we want your opinions and views only, please.

We accept no more than one a month per writer for print publication.

Letters may be attributed to only one person, with the full first name (not initials). No anonymous letters, or letters using pseudonyms, will be published in print.

Please include a daytime phone number, and full street address, for verification of authorship. Neither the phone number nor the address will be published, nor will they be made available to any third party.

Because of the volume of mail, we give publication preference to local letter writers.

In addition to the online form, you may also write:
To the Editor, Skagit Valley Herald, P.O. Box 578, Mount Vernon, WA 98273; fax: 360-428-0400.
