FAA gives port $1 million for airport work

The Port of Anacortes will receive $1 million in the next month to increase safety and improve operations at the Anacortes Airport.

The money comes from Federal Aviation Administration grants the port applied for last year. Since then, staff has been working on the engineering for the work to be done.

The money will be used toward an emergency generator, constructing an access road and apron, installing gate locking controls on the fence, rehabilitating the taxiway and creating an alternate run-up area and wash down facility.

Public Works open house is May 30

The city of Anacortes hosts a public works open house 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Friday, May 30 at the award winning wastewater treatment plant, 500 T Ave.

The event provides an opportunity for the community to see firsthand the systems and equipment that maintains the outstanding quality of life that is enjoyed in Anacortes.

Students and residents can ride in the street sweeper and garbage trucks and operate surveying equipment.

The city’s camera truck crew demonstrates its abilities to view underground pipes and students can operate the equipment used for locating buried pipes and utilities.

The state of the art wastewater treatment plant will be open for tours to illustrate the importance of biology, chemistry and physics in the processing of “you know what” into water that is nearly drinkable and ready for discharge into the Guemes Channel.

Exhibits on water conservation, recycling and composting will also be on display.
