Burlington-Edison’s Superintendent Rick Jones has been offered the superintendent position at North Kitsap School District.

North Kitsap’s school board voted Jones as the “superintendent designee” in a Thursday night meeting, said district spokeswoman Chris Case.

Jones will enter contract negotiations next week, and his salary will be determined then.

Jones said his first day at North Kitsap would be July 1. He plans to help Burlington-Edison transition to a new superintendent. Jones has held his current post for nearly 10 years.

The Burlington-Edison School Board will likely discuss Jones’ departure and the search for a new superintendent at the next School Board meeting this Monday, he said.

Thank goodness!  Hopefully now the B-E school district can get back on track to addressing and meeting the needs of its students and staff.

Thank God he is finally gone.  I really feel sorry for N. Kitsap, they have no idea what a mess they just hired.  It is also a good thing to get rid of Shawn Woodward to the same district.  I hope the new regime takes some time to look into how bad Rick Jones left BESD.

This is sad, we originally moved here in the 70’s because BESD was among the very best.  Now it’s embarrassing and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.  School levies always passed, it was almost just a formality.  Seeing the stupid things they do with our money and the stupid things they consider important now while bypassing basic education, I wouldn’t vote to give them another dime.  I hope this is a positive step, but it will probably always be the same.

I know Rick & Shawn, and the comments about them are unkind. Please don’t vilify the person even though you mave have disagreements with the job he/she does Further, have you taken your concerns to them? Or are you just happy to fire away safely and anonymously?

I’m not here to defend the performance of supt. Jones, but people have to get a clue. It’s a tough job, and many decisions have to be made that will not be popular. Just as fewer quality people move into teaching, even fewer go into administration. State and federal intrusiveness (not to mention funding battles) are now catch-22’s for superintendents. The days of a revered statesman superintendent are gone.

Some supt positions in the state pay well over $200k, others in the high $100’s. That’s the market for the job. B-E is nowhere near to this scale. The next B-E supt will NOT be a superhero. The best we can hope for is someone who is principled, a good communicator, honest, and tries to do the right things for students, teachers, and the community generally. Hopefully that person is out there and will have our support, and we’ll cut them some slack.
