Deluxe may consider different S-W site for waste facility

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — In the face of rising community opposition to a proposed solid waste processing plant on Jameson Street across from the high school, Deluxe Recyling and Disposal’s owner said Tuesday the company is considering an alternative site.

“We are trying to listen to people,” said Larry McCarter, Deluxe’s owner. “We are trying to hear people. We are trying to make sense of it. All I can say is I am listening and thinking.”

While McCarter declined to provide details, Sedro-Woolley Mayor Mike Anderson said the new site under consideration is on property formerly occupied by Weyerhaeuser subsidiary Northwest Hardwoods. The property is southwest of the high school, at the west end of Jameson, fronting on Highway 9.

That land is currently owned by Burlington-based White Pass Investments LLC, which bought the five-parcel property from Weyerhaeuser in December 2007 for $2.6 million, according to county records.

Current permit applications filed with the city have the garbage handling facility going to the east at 109 Jameson St., a former lumber mill site near Sedro-Woolley High School. That site has drawn criticism because it is so close to the school and to homes.

But Deluxe has yet to purchase any land for the facility, and McCarter said that his company would be interested in a site farther away from the school.

“We are hoping they will move a little to the west,” said Anderson. “It would be nicer if they were down there, for everyone ... because they would be a little further away from the high school.”

McCarter would not say what properties, if any, Deluxe is considering in addition to the Jameson Street site. However, he said the property Anderson referred to on Highway 9 had not been ruled out.

“I do not have any other property right now,” said McCarter. “There’s dreams. Nothing is solid ... I haven’t ruled out anything.”

I have lived in that area for man years, I am uncertain why people are so concerned about the waste facility. When S-W lumber mill was there it caused noise and smell that was not a huge concern then. It always seem that we make it hard for the city to grow in a time of economic hardship.

Alisa, you’re probably right. By 2013
Mount Vernon and Anacortes will probably have their own transfer/recycling centers saving their citzens fuel expenses and collecting utility taxes for city improvement and Woolley will say “We should have done that.” Clasic Sedro-Woolley

The real issue is the location next to Sedro-Woolley High School and in a residential neighborhood.
The mills brought a logging way of life to Sedro-Woolley; a tradition, a career. They employed thousands of people over many generations. The site across from the high school was suited well by the mills. ‘Twas very likely that many high school students would, one day, be working in the logging industry. The mills also brought prosperity to Sedro-Woolley in various support industries.
I just don’t see any of this a reality with a transfer station, no matter the location, but I would be less offended by the old hard-wood mill proposed in this article as an alternative site.

Sedro-Woolley is the town that logging built, not the town garbage destroyed.

I recently heard from a Sierra Pacific Representative that the smell that comes from a lumber mill is called “the smell of money”.

Sedro-Woolley, don’t be fooled by Mr. McCarter’s words. In a SVH article from May 1st, McCarter is quoted saying, “I think we’ll waltz right through that (appeal)”, in regards to the Janicki appeal set for a hearing at the Sedro-Woolley Municipal Building May 5th at 10:00 AM .  How is that being a good listener? How is that being a good neighbor? It isn’t and they won’t be good neighbors!
Come show you support in opposition to a dump being built in downtown Sedro-Woolley.

That was stupid on McCarter for saying that but probably true. He also said at a meeting at County, April 30th that Deluxe is closing (purchasing) on the property across from high school so the prospect of Deluxe moving out to Hwy 9 sounds dead. Court times ahead and Deluxe has the resources to battle.
