Port of Anacortes Commissioner Steve Hopley said Friday he’s considering running for the State Senate seat held by Harriet Spanel.

Keith Rubin, also an Anacortes port commissioner, announced recently he is interested in the job. Both Hopley and Rubin would run as Democrats.

“I’m interested and considering it,” Hopley said last week. He will decide whether to run before the county Democrat convention on April 12, he said.

Hopley represents the port’s District 3, which includes Bay View and the area around Padilla Bay. His term ends December 2011.

Spanel, a Bellingham Democrat, represents the 40th Legislative District and is chair of the Majority Caucus. She said she won’t seek a fifth term.

The 40th District encompasses northwest Skagit County including Anacortes and Mount Vernon, southwest Whatcom County including Bellingham, and San Juan County.

The pickings at the Port of Anacortes must not be as lucrative as people think.
