Port of Anacortes Commissioner Steve Hopley announced Monday he will run for the 40th Legislative District state Senate seat held by Harriet Spanel.

“I think there’s a need for my kind of leadership in state government,” Hopley said. “I have a message to Washington voters and I want the opportunity to present that.”

Hopley, a Democrat, lives on Samish Island and represents the port’s District 3. His term ends December 2011.

He worked as a commercial Dungeness crab and salmon fisherman in Puget Sound for 15 years and retired as deputy general manager of Marine Resources Company International in 2001.

Bellingham Democrat Spanel said she will not run for re-election.

The 40th District includes Anacortes, Mount Vernon and San Juan County.
