Known gang member being held on $500,000 bail

Juan Miguel Garcia, a 21-year-old Mount Vernon man, was arrested March 11 in connection with a Feb. 16 drive-by shooting at the Moose Lodge in Mount Vernon. He is being held in Skagit County jail on $500,000 bail.

Mount Vernon police enlisted help from the U.S. Marshall’s office in the arrest.

Garcia has been charged with drive-by shooting, unlawful possession of a firearm and three counts of first degree assault with a firearm.

Each of his five charges carries $100,000 bail.

Just before midnight Feb. 16, the Mount Vernon Police Department responded to a report of gunshots fired in the area of the Moose Lodge, located on the parking revetment downtown at 813 S. First St.

A birthday party at the lodge was dispersing at the time, said Jill Boudreau, public information officer for Mount Vernon police.

When officers arrived, three Mount Vernon men, ages 17, 18 and 20, had received wounds to their legs from a handgun.

None of the injuries were life-threatening, Boudreau said, and all were treated and released at Skagit Valley Hospital.

She said several cars in the area were also damaged by bullets from the handgun.

At the scene of the drive-by shooting, officers obtained information on possible suspects, and were able to determine the shooting was likely between local factions of the Norteño and Sureño gangs, Boudreau said.

Witnesses exhibited characteristics of gang culture, and the accused is also a known member of a gang, she said.

The U.S. Marshall Service helped with manpower during the arrest, which took place in the 300 block of Stanford Drive in Mount Vernon, and with surveillance prior to Garcia’s apprehension, Boudreau said.

Thank you VERY very much *shrug*.  That is EXACTLY what I was saying. :)

Shrug yes you are right about crime requiring personal choice, but factors also have a lot to do with peoples’ outcomes.
For Manerva,
“I’m so sick and tired of people getting away with twice the crime because “they’re a minority” and their “less fortunate” and have “less opportunity.” They CHOSE to be a thug.  They CHOSE to commit the crime.
(after being censored)
1.  I can almost hear you use one of the derogatory names for ‘minorities’
“we’ll leave that you to you”

2.  I guess we know who tickles Irtnog’s pickle.

1.  You ALMOST hear only what you want to hear.

2.  Obviously a non-derogatory statement

Morena, there are always reasons a person chooses to do what they do, but those reasons seldom equate into more than excuses.  Being a better person when it is not expected of you is hard, it’s painful, and it’s a fight one must continue fighting every single day.  But NOT doing so is still a choice, and regardless of the reasons leading up to that decision, there is only one person who can make it.  I think we’re all in agreement on this.

I am willing to bet there is a lot less racism actually being said than we might infer.  I know you two (Manerva and Morena) aren’t racist.  I’m not racist.  Dirk isn’t racist.  We’re all so worked up trying to ensure people know that we aren’t racist that we can come off a little strong, which makes us SOUND racist even though we are not.  So, Manerva, Morena, whaddaya say?  Truce?

I have but 1 question here.  Whom is the minority in the Valley at this time?

I don’t think at all that this has anything to do with the race of someone. Any race could have commited this crime so let’s leave that out, for goodness sake let’s pretend he is pink!!  I believe that yes, it is in each indivdual’s power to choose what actions they want to take, what they want to be in life, what they think is right. Everyone is brought up diffrent in life, they have certain people that they look up to, people that they want to be just like. Not all cases are good because what if the person they admire so much is a gang banger? or a drug dealer? a dancer?.. etc you get my point. What youth needs is enough peole who care and redirect their thinking in life. It is all just potential in the wrong direction.
