MOUNT VERNON — A man police initially thought to be armed caused officers to close down the intersection of South LaVenture and East Section streets for almost three hours this evening.

The incident started around 5:35 p.m. Friday after a 911 caller told dispatchers that a man had stopped his pickup in the middle of the road and waved a gun out the window, said Jill Boudreau, a police spokeswoman. But officers didn’t find a gun and think the 35-year-old Burlington man was suffering from a medical emergency, she said.

When police arrived at the intersection, the man in the truck appeared to be semi-conscious, but he didn’t respond to officers’ verbal commands, said Lt. Chris Cammock said.

For the public’s safety, officers told nearby residents to remain indoors, and they closed off access to the intersection and parking lots of the nearby school and gas station, police said. Around 6:45 p.m., officers then used an armored SWAT vehicle and their patrol cars to box in the black Nissan pickup to prevent the truck from leaving and the driver from bolting.

The officers approaching behind shields then pulled the man, who was unconscious, from the pickup without incident, Cammock said.

The man was taken to Skagit Valley Hospital, and his condition wasn’t available tonight. About 12 officers responded to the incident, and the road reopened around 7:20 p.m.

Something is not right here. Did responding officers on scene see a weapon?  If the guy was semi-conscious was he acting as a threat or just suffering in his vehicle with a medical problem? All because someone THOUGHT they saw a gun...keep an eye on this one, i bet he was waving a cellphone.  hope he’s ok

As usual this is just another over reaction by scared, untrained, unrestrained wanna-be cops.  Mount Vernon always seems to over react to incidents such as these. If you study the time frame as well as been listening to the mvpd frequency and heard the conversations at the scene. Not on officer ever made any type of contact, nor did they get close enough to even see if the victim had a weapon.  they did however, repeat over the radio several times that they observe the victim slouched over, eyes closed.  In short, I hope MVPD gets sued and reppromanded, and the officers involved fired for exessive force, unlawful use of force.
this is ridicious! another reason for law abiding AMERICAN Citizens to stand up, united and arm them selves. Its time to take back OUR community.

This inept MV police reponse doesn’t surprise me. I once wrote a letter to the mayor regarding a hit and run accident. My parents provided a full description of the perpetrator’s vehicle. Alas, the cop “investigating” the accident told my parents, “If I didn’t witness the incident, it didn’t happen”!

It was a cellphone he was waving. He has low bloodsugar attacks and knows when it gets that low he loses the motor skills needed to use a phone. So he was waving his phone and pleading for someone to help call medics thebest way he knew how. What he ended up getting was guns in his face while his condtitions got worse. He did get treatment and is doing as best he can.
