MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man was arrested Thursday night on investigation of assault and drive-by shooting in connection with at least two reports of a gun being fired in the area of East Division Street.

The shots were first heard at 8:20 p.m. by an officer patrolling the 600 block of Streeter Place, said Detective Sgt. Mark Shipman. The officer then heard a car accelerating on East Division near the intersection of LaVenture Road, and several more shots were fired near the intersection with 18th Street.

Several people in the area called 911 to report hearing gunfire in the same location, but Shipman said most of the callers saw nothing.

One caller told police that she saw a car apparently chasing another and flashes coming from one of the vehicles, Shipman said.

Shortly after that report, two young men from Concrete and Mount Vernon, called 911 to say another car had chased the one they were in and they had been shot at, Shipman said. The callers said they recognized a man in the vehicle.

Police arrested the 18-year-old man about 9:55 p.m. at a home on North LaVenture, according to Skagit County Jail records. Additional details were unavailable this morning.

Officers ask that anyone with information call 360-336-6271 or 911.

This just makes my stomach turn.  I have only lived in the Skagit Valley for 10 years and Mount Vernon for two years but I am ready to leave.  I know running away doesn’t solve anything, but I’ve just about had it.  I cringe everytime I see a nice clean fence covered with grafitti, or hear of some stupid punks involved in drive by shootings.  It’s just a shame that such a nice city with so much potential has to deal with this crap.  We need to unite to take back our city.  Let’s stage a protest or something..but wear your armor, we might get shot at.

I know it’s natural to look back at one’s childhood through rose-tinted glasses, but I really do believe Mount Vernon was a better place to be back when I was growing up there.  I’m shocked by how it has gone downhill.  I barely recognize my hometown anymore.

Part of the problem is the current philosophy prevalent in state and city governments and many police departments.  To learn more, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Community_policing

Everyone gets mad about the gangs. But really not mad enough. It seems in this community we just don’t want to confront the issue. Why isn’t pressure being applied to the city and schools of Mount Vernon? I have a friend that works in juvenile detention. She state’s in the last two years gangs have taken over. Kids(13-17 y/o) are coming in on assault, weapons charges and have to be separated because they will kill each other in rival gangs.  This is something our community needs to face, sooner or later.  I hate to think what later will bring to us all.

Report Violation Posted by Lee_USA  on  March 08, 2008 - 10:06 AM

Doing nothing about gangs is just so much easier.

Having police on the streets makes a big difference but then you have the whiners crying about having to pay for them.

Report Violation Posted by Irtnog  on  March 08, 2008 - 11:21 AM

Rounding up and deporting all the illegals would be a good start.

Report Violation Posted by scrugg  on  March 08, 2008 - 10:21 PM

The root cause of these problems in our community is drugs and over population of people who do not belong here. Since the economy is going down, these excess people will go to Canada or head south. I suggest that we should erect check points and curfews and have armed volunteers patrol the neighborhoods. Norris should start this lead since he now got his raise. Lets get our arms and firepower over the shoulder and lookout for these idiots and never give them any chance!

Report Violation Posted by scrugg  on  March 08, 2008 - 10:25 PM

Too many houses being built along Division is causing these problems. Them Norris’ and his city planners are to blame and should pay for it.

Report Violation Posted by crespidus  on  March 10, 2008 - 08:18 AM

Really...houses on Division are the problem?  Enlighten me please

Report Violation Posted by Manerva  on  March 10, 2008 - 09:27 AM

It’s also a “culture” thing.  You have some within this minority that PROMOTE gang affiliations/lifestyles.  And they wonder why they get no respect and everybody wants them gone.  They want to make it a “racial” issue...but it’s really NOT.  I wouldn’t care if you were purple skinned and green haired...if you choose to be thug then you need to GET GONE.

Report Violation Posted by skagitgirl  on  March 10, 2008 - 10:12 AM

It is a violence thing. Regardless of it’s origination or affiliation.  Complaining does nothing.

Report Violation Posted by whatsgoingon  on  March 10, 2008 - 11:02 AM

Ok..so complaining does nothing, obviously.  Let’s be constsructive.  We can’t blame this on just one person/entity.  It’s a COMMUNITY problem, thus the COMMUNITY needs to get involved right?  So the first thing we need to do is bring this issue out in the open, and tell our leaders and neighbors that we KNOW its a problem, even if they are in denial. I think the best way is an anti-violence/gang march/protest/rally.  A peaceful one, hopefully.  Maybe invite the mayor..a few of MVPD’s finest, and all community members who are sick and tired of this.  A march down College Way or Division to City Hall might turn some heads, and open some eyes.  Of course then the issue remains..what do we do after that?

Report Violation Posted by Manerva  on  March 10, 2008 - 11:42 AM

Stating the OBVIOUS (that complaining does nothing) “does nothing” either.  Whatsgoingon...you have good ideas....but I don’t know if a march will do that good, and I don’t think people would partake for fear of retribution???

Report Violation Posted by skagitgirl  on  March 10, 2008 - 12:20 PM

Manerva, Yeah it does. Got you going huh?  So, a protest might help. But,Manerva is right about the fear factor. Tis true. How about public pressure on leaders of this community. How about we ask the school if they have a plan?  Just go to the high school and count how many back pockets you see with a red rag or a blue rag.  It starts with recognition in the officials that lead the community. Unfortunately, we are very concerned about fluoride right now. This is a tough row to hoe for the farmers. Write “love letters” to Bud Norris, Carl Bruner and the 3 almighty commissioners.

Report Violation Posted by retnfo  on  March 10, 2008 - 12:34 PM

The best place to protest is in front of your city council at one of their meetings, in person with as many supporters as you can get.

Report Violation Posted by whatsgoingon  on  March 10, 2008 - 12:50 PM

Well then, if everyone’s afraid of retribution, of getting involved, of taking back our sense safety in our community, then we have already lost this battle.  I agree that we need to continue to badger Norris and Co., but if we could just get his attention in a grand way first..as an entire community and not just joe doe here and there, he might actually listen and believe we’re serious.  I KNOW a protest isn’t going to solve anything..it’s just a way to get things STARTED.  It could be good or bad, but at least it’s action.

Report Violation Posted by Manerva  on  March 10, 2008 - 01:19 PM

Whatsgoingon, I am not saying that I’m afraid of retribution but others are. Skagitgirl, you didn’t really get me going because I pretty much agree that complaining isn’t any good for anything...I guess I consider this posting board a way for people to express themselves which I believe is the START to action....I could be wrong.

Are we sure that this was gang related and not some kind dysfunctional familial response?  The first charge listed is a DV pre-trial violation?

Report Violation Posted by skagitgirl  on  March 10, 2008 - 01:42 PM

The first charge is what police had on him in the system. He violated a no-contact order.  Maybe they picked him up at the girlfriends house. Or maybe the girlfriend was in the car with the two men.  He is in the frequent flier program. Get it? When I think of drive by shooting I think of...what? Yes Manerva, expression is the start!
