MOUNT VERNON — A Mount Vernon man was arrested Thursday night on investigation of assault and drive-by shooting in connection with at least two reports of a gun being fired in the area of East Division Street.

The shots were first heard at 8:20 p.m. by an officer patrolling the 600 block of Streeter Place, said Detective Sgt. Mark Shipman. The officer then heard a car accelerating on East Division near the intersection of LaVenture Road, and several more shots were fired near the intersection with 18th Street.

Several people in the area called 911 to report hearing gunfire in the same location, but Shipman said most of the callers saw nothing.

One caller told police that she saw a car apparently chasing another and flashes coming from one of the vehicles, Shipman said.

Shortly after that report, two young men from Concrete and Mount Vernon, called 911 to say another car had chased the one they were in and they had been shot at, Shipman said. The callers said they recognized a man in the vehicle.

Police arrested the 18-year-old man about 9:55 p.m. at a home on North LaVenture, according to Skagit County Jail records. Additional details were unavailable this morning.

Officers ask that anyone with information call 360-336-6271 or 911.

I didn’t mean to imply that I thought you, specifically, were afraid Manerva. I meant it in a general sense.  Sorry for the confusion.  But I see your point, it is scary for people to confront this issue.  But there is safety in numbers, too.  I certainly don’t want to put myself or anyone in danger.  Anyhow, even if this particular incident isn’t gang related, it’s still violence that doesn’t belong in our city.  I think about all the what if’s.  What if I was driving by with my kids when this shooting was happening?  I wasn’t, but next time I, or some other innocent bystander could be, and it enrages me.  I am not suggesting protesting only gangs, but all violence, gang realated or not, which has been occuring in Mount Vernon lately.  Sorry for rambling.

Marching to protest along division aint gonna do me any good! You’ll just gonna get shot at or shout out. Norris & his cohorts aint gonna join me either. Most of us in this forum aint gonna do nothing anyway, they’ll just keep blobbing along behind their screen names! Neither clinton nor obama can do anything good anyway, so for now, I’ll just stick with them NRA.

The only thing thats helping now is the economy. Its going downhill fast and so with them house prices along division. I cant wait to see in the next year or so that them $ will just be worth 50 cents! Then I’ll even hire a band to play at the park ‘cause them transplants will be either heading south and north and them houses demo’d and so wit them realtors!

*blink* *blink* ok then...MVRES I was JOKING about him being polish.  I knew there was greater than an 80% chance that the name would be some kind of latino name.  Whatsgoingon, you’re right on about the crime in general, and there is safety in numbers.  Skagitgirl - you and I were thinking the same thing....and it isn’t like bank robbers or rapists do drive by shootings.  I guess I was trying to be fair in my assessment..but you’re right.  When you hear drive by..it definately makes you think of only one thing.

I heard that the city of Mount Vernon is putting together a truck and canopy full of paint, graffiti remover, and other supplies and having volunteers drive it and clean graffiti from the neighborhoods.  I say if you want to get involved, that would be a great start.  I think that we just contact the police dept. to sign up.

what would be great if the state of washington put together a truck that had a mayor remover!
