A 29-year-old Anacortes woman was found dead in her jail cell early Wednesday morning, and the Skagit County coroner said the cause of death was suicide.

The woman, whose identity was not released by Coroner Daniel Dempsey, was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night after a family member reported that she punched him in the stomach, said Anacortes Police Capt. Bonnie Bowers.

She was arrested at her 26th Street home on investigation of domestic violence assault and was examined by paramedics from the Anacortes Fire Department.
The arrest was “without incident,” but the woman did seem “quite intoxicated” and was very sleepy, Bowers said. She arrived at the Skagit County Jail around 12:30 a.m.

Because she was intoxicated, she was placed in a cell by herself, police spokeswoman Jill Boudreau said Wednesday.

Jail staff check on inmates every hour and found her body during their routine rounds at about 1:55 a.m.

Huh?  So this woman was arrested by the ANACORTES Police and died at the SKAGIT County Jail.  I’ve lived in Mount Vernon long enough to know that Jill Boudreau is the spokeswomen for the MOUNT VERNON Police.  Why would the MOUNT VERNON Police be speaking for ANACORTES or SKAGIT COUNTY?  Or is the Skagit Valley Herald having trouble keeping their spokespeople straight???

Wow, shoot the messenger....maybe since the event occurred in Mount Vernon, the MVPD is the agency investigating.  And maybe law enforcement agencies have OTHER agencies investigate incidents to avoid the perception of impropriety.  And maybe you, like the average layperson, don’t know everything that goes on behind the scenes.  Nor do you need to.

Curious as to why the woman was not taken to the hospital for a fit for jail exam.  I see that she was examined by paramedics at the scene, but was that sufficient to ensure her safety?

@noodles:  Yes, I am ‘shooting the messenger.’ The messenger in this case is the SVH/goskagit.com editors.  I re-read the story and nowhere in the story does it specify that MVPD is invesitgating to avoid the apperance of impropriety by Anacortes or the Skagit County Sheriff.  Now that you brought it up, that does make sense.  I’m just saying that the Skagit Valley Herald/goskagit.com editors really ought to proofread what they publish to make sure it makes sense.  And what’s with the name calling:  If I’m just “the average layperson” then who are you?

@rick5569:  You are right.  This isn’t the place for a flame war.  I’m sorry for firing back at noodles.  I feel badly for this woman’s family and her children.
