A 29-year-old Anacortes woman was found dead in her jail cell early Wednesday morning, and the Skagit County coroner said the cause of death was suicide.

The woman, whose identity was not released by Coroner Daniel Dempsey, was arrested at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night after a family member reported that she punched him in the stomach, said Anacortes Police Capt. Bonnie Bowers.

She was arrested at her 26th Street home on investigation of domestic violence assault and was examined by paramedics from the Anacortes Fire Department.
The arrest was “without incident,” but the woman did seem “quite intoxicated” and was very sleepy, Bowers said. She arrived at the Skagit County Jail around 12:30 a.m.

Because she was intoxicated, she was placed in a cell by herself, police spokeswoman Jill Boudreau said Wednesday.

Jail staff check on inmates every hour and found her body during their routine rounds at about 1:55 a.m.
