It’s reassuring that all the parties in the siting discussion for a solid-waste processing plant in Sedro-Woolley seem open to alternatives.

Plans by Deluxe Recycling and Disposal to build the plant near Sedro-Woolley High School have generated what could politely be called community concern, accompanied by some nasty verbiage hurled at city officials. Organized resistance to the high school location continues to mount.

This week, it was revealed that Deluxe may be considering another site farther away from the high school, one that will likely generate fewer neighborhood issues. City officials have indicated they are also ready to look at other possibilities.

Relocating the proposed plant won’t answer all the questions that have arisen about its operation and how it fits into an overall garbage disposal plan for Skagit County. But a different site could shift the focus of discussion to those other considerations and cool off residents who believe that their concerns haven’t been heard or, if heard, haven’t been given any weight.
