Now that the new Solid Waste Governance Board is in place, the focus of Skagit County and its municipal partners must be on the world beyond 2013.

The termination of the present agreement between the county and the cities is just five years away, not all that much time when one considers that we currently have no long-range plan for handling solid waste.

It was a tortuous path that led us to this point.

But for the insistence of two county commissioners on ignoring the will of the cities in the 2004 Solid Waste Comprehensive Plan, we might have started on the crucial planning process years earlier. And we might still have the more simple system consisting of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee, through which the cities previously made their wishes known.

The cities can hardly be blamed for rejecting an advisory committee whose advice is so arbitrarily ignored. The ill will engendered by the commissioners’ overriding the cities’ unanimous support of a single county transfer station led to a near-meltdown in relations between the county and the cities.

It took nearly four years to mend the breach and produce the new governance system for solid waste that gives the cities the kind of say they wanted at the outset.

There are still some difficulties ahead. The county is still fighting two lawsuits related to its rejection of the same contract that Commissioners Ted Anderson and Don Munks adopted after a highly questionable process.

The county declared the contract with Cimarron Transfer and Recycling void after the company couldn’t begin operations on the site for which the permit was issued. A new company, Deluxe Recycling and Disposal, has acquired Cimarron and has continued to press that company’s lawsuit against the county as well as its own legal action.

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been spent in legal costs to defend the lawsuits springing from the recycling contract that never should have been.

Deluxe has chosen to try to muscle its way into the Skagit County solid-waste market through the courts. And it initially found a friendly reception from Sedro-Woolley city officials, who are now faced with a veritable anti-Deluxe uprising by residents, led by the highly respected matriarch of the prominent Janicki family.

We hope that the new governance board can use its authority to bring order to the chaos surrounding the county’s solid-waste planning process.

The board should step back and take a long-term view of the challenge of reducing waste volume by recycling and develop a plan that best serves all the residents of Skagit County.

Stop the "sour grapes" and look at the bigger picture here. Not a DUMP - get the image of a big pile of stinky trash with seagulls, crows, and rats out of your heads and get real. Educate yourselves people and realize what your are trying to force out... jobs, revenue, education for SWHS students right next door in an industry that has such exciting potential beyond just "trash processing". While Mrs. Janicki may be highly respected, keep in mind that one big business doesn't usually like another big business coming into town. You call it a "contract that never should have been" and Deluxe has "chosen to muscle it's way in" - seems more like a business that has done it's homework as I hope the citizens of S-W will be sure to do in the future!

Didn’t Shakespeare write something about this? "...a dump by any other name would smell as rank."

No "sour grapes" here Mr. Deluxe. Quite a few City of Sedro residents are very well educated, smart and savvy people. We're not idiots (like some elected officials)and can easily spot a slimy bully when we see one. We've done our homework. Take your dump and dump it on some other community. I'd rather have a Janicki business any day of the week. They are a part of the fabric of this community and won't foul the bed they lay in. And I'd trust them a lot farther than I would some unscrupulous salesman. You tell 'em Brett.

You assume, wrongly, that I am affiliated with Deluxe. Nor am I calling S-W citizens "idiots" - your word, not mine (and may I point out that those elected officials you refer to were put in office by the majority of S-W citizens). I simply fear that many are not looking beyond the word "dump" and that while Deluxe is a money-making business, it is also potentially something much bigger for S-W. Anyone for renewable energy sources here?? "Dump it on some other community"? How neighborly of you. Guess you want all your eggs, seemingly rotten ones, in the Janicki basket. Hope they can single-handedly support this town!

Renewable energy?, yeah right!

This is a transfer station clear and simple. There is going to be hundreds of municipal garbage-trucks and self haulers with trash in tow, polluting our air, clogging the streets of Sedro-Woolley, making any simple trip around town miserable. This trash will then be sorted and sold to places like China. (See May 22, 2007 proposal with Deluxe to the Skagit County Commissioners)

This is no altruistic endeavor, no, it is to make money and at the expense of the safety and sanity of Sedro-Woolley High School students, the economic vitality of our downtown, and the quality of life in the surrounding neighborhoods.

Now let’s talk about the Janicki’s. This family has been in business for over 50 years here in Sedro-Woolley. That is longevity... that is long term support. What did you expect Deluxe was going to lift us out of the primordial fog and into the 21 century? “Get Real”

PS... Your quote of “sour grapes” is incorrect. There was no reference to said grapes in the original article, so quoting these grapes is just wrong.

That's a mighty high horse you sit on brettie... maybe you should take a refresher in grammar. The quotes around sour grapes were not in reference to a previous direct quote. Quotes can also be used to indicate words used ironically, in some unusual way, deemed special, or indicating borrowed words or phrases. Let's stick to the issue at hand from now on, not petty things like punctuation.

Brettie, let's talk about the Janicki's. They have mom appealing Deluxe while her daughters Mary McGoffin and Jeannie Gross use the kids at SWHS and write letters to editors trying to derail Deluxe. This goes on after Rob Janicki is trying to put in a garbage burner that cost 50 million and needs the garbage from three counties to be profitable. Another reason to stop Deluxe's recycling effort - they don't want to disrupt the trash flow. Open your eyes and talk about trash truck traffic from three counties. It's all about $$$$$$$$

So it's a classic case of the bully and his thugs. How quaint...and how so unoriginal. Looks like the usual case of weak and ineffectual individuals trying to puff themselves up to try to scare off the competition. Keep on puffing yourselves up with all of the bravado (and all of the sneering intellectualism - that is a good smoke screen to hide behind).
If you really were worth any respect you'd reveal who you really are. But that is too much to expect from thugs. Good luck Deluxe. You and your bully cohorts are pieces of work. What goes round - comes round.

Your right, you have a grandmother who is concerned with this railroaded, horrible idea that will destroy the quality of life in downtown Sedro-Woolley. So what should one do if concerned? Well, consult a lawyer to get the legal option to battle it.

The students of Sedro-Woolley High School will bear the brunt of this railroaded, horrible idea that will destroy the peaceful learning process at the high school. So what did the students do? They wrote letters and organized a protest. Sound like students using their right to free-speech and the right to free association. This is democracy in action and I applaud the student’s valor. These two girls are following the strong role-model their parents represent. You don’t become a successful person in this life sitting on the couch!

Two video’s every one should be watching in regards to the Deluxe debacle...

The Sedro-Woolley High School student’s protest... purely amazing!!! A win for Sedro-Woolley!!!

Deluxe’s proposal to the Skagit County Commissioners showing the whole plan for a garbage transfer station. Interesting is the stern warning from the County Commissioners to the Sedro-Woolley Mayor about the true and harsh impact on the city will face as a whole.

Wasn't it nice of King5 to highlight Kathryn McGoffin's opinion... While she must be a very intelligent young lady, I'd much rather hear from students who's opinions aren't likely tainted by family interest in the debate. Isn't media coverage wonderful, so unbiased!

"dan litton" and "disappointed" are surely on the Deluxe payroll...

The Bible says we should tend to the beam in our own eye before snivelling about the mote in our neighbor's eye.

With that in mind, let's survey the hypocrisy landscape at Sedro-Woolley City Hall.

For starters, there's Louie "Louie Da Loophole" Requa, who shills and votes for Deluxe from his City Council seat, all the while working on the Deluxe payroll.

Meanwhile, City Hall is harassing those nice ladies with their walk-in clinic who just want to help the many folks in Sedro that can't afford traditional health care. I even heard yesterday that someone from City Hall was calling around threatening businesses who signed the petition supporting the walk-in clinic.

At the same time, they're rolling out the red carpet for the garbage goons.

This is what we've come to expect from Mike "Mikey Da Moustache" Anderson and Eron "Herman Munster" Berg.

Someone needs to storm City Hall with a bullwhip in hand, and clear out the bums.
