SEATTLE — Sarah Martin swam and played basketball and tennis while at Sedro-Woolley High School.
Now she’s rowing for the University of Washington.
Despite having no previous rowing experience, Martin decided a year ago to walk on to the rowing program at Washington.
“Sarah had never pulled an oar before,” said her mother, Lisa Martin. “Now, she just loves it.”
Martin was recently named to the varsity after rowing with the novice squad her freshman year.
She was recently named the team’s most inspirational rower.
“The coaches believe she has a lot of potential,” Lisa Martin added. “She’s a big, strong girl and that is what the coaches want. She’s not quite in that top 20 group (varsity eight, junior varsity eight, varsity four) just yet, but there’s plenty of potential.”
Martin was to row this weekend as a member of a varsity four crew when the Huskies hosted Oregon State on the waters of Mountlake Cut.
She is majoring in earth and space science. She has a 3.26 grade-point average.
Land of the rising fastball
Anacortes graduate Rick Guttormson continues to flourish on the mound in Japan with the Fukuoka Softbank Hawks.
The hard-throwing right-hander recently notched his first win of the season, beating the Orix Buffaloes 5-1. The win ended the Hawks’ three-game losing streak.
The win evens Guttormson’s record at 1-1. He has a 3.31 ERA. He’s appeared in four games and has started two. He has pitched a total of 161⁄3 innings, amassing nine strikeouts and issuing seven walks.
The Hawks play in the Pacific League. It’s one of the two professional leagues in Japan. The other is the Central League.
The Pacific league boasts six teams, including the Chiba Lotte Marines, Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters, Orix Buffaloes, Seibu Lions and Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.
Guttormson originally signed with the Yakult Swallows in 2005.
