If this year’s Sedro-Woolley boys’ soccer team wants to improve on last year, they’ll have to stay eligible.
Last year, a number of players were unable to suite up consistently for the Cubs, which limited coach Gary Warman’s options on the field.
“We had quite a few kids in and out of the lineup,” Warman said. “It was always different.”
The team will return senior Doug Lanning and junior Jed Givens, who should do most of the scoring for the Cubs, Warman said. Other key returnees will be seniors Ted Ware, Matt Murrell and juniors Richard Weyrich and Cody Trout.
Although the team didn’t lose many seniors, the Cubs did lose their top sweeper in the offseason. Junior Bruce Karper moved to Ohio.
Newcomer Trevor Cook, a freshman, will see considerable minutes for Sedro-Woolley, the coach said.
Juniors Alan Vancleeve and Edgar Lamas will both challenge for the goalkeeper position. Vancleeve started for last year’s team on goal.
“Goal keeping was our most inconsistent position last year,” Warman said. “If our keeping is more consistent, we’ll be in a position to be more competitive on the field.”
