The Sedro-Woolley girls’ tennis team returns a number of seniors looking to improve on last year.
Although many of the varsity roster spots aren’t set, co-coaches Mike Ludwig and Steve McConnell said their No. 1 doubles team of Becky Larsen and Kathryn McGoffin will be tough this season.

“They’ve always been consistent and they’ve learned the doubles strategy,” Ludwig said. “They’ve gotten more powerful and are very competitive. They want to go to state.”

The duo is joined by a number of other key returnees, including Chelsea Jann, Kelly Tucker, Kenzie Rose, Elissa Burch and Leeza Whalen. Those girls will likely make up the team’s top varsity spots, but could be joined by other juniors if they continue to improve, Ludwig said.

About 45 girls turned out this year, many of whom are sophomores and freshmen that could make a difference for the Cubs’ team in the next couple of seasons, the coach said.

The team has already competed in a jamboree against Anacortes, which took place last weekend.

“Everybody got a couple of wins, so it was a nice way to start the season,” Ludwig said.

The team lost arguably its best player, Carly Stroud, to graduation last year. Stroud won the sub-district and district tournaments before competing at state last season.
