Anacortes’ fastpitch team clinched a first or second seed at the district tournament with a victory at Mount Baker in a 13-9 game that was halted by a deluge after the sixth inning.Following the April 29 game, Anacortes dropped a 7-2 non-conference game at Sedro-Woolley on May Day before dispatching Friday Harbor 14-1 in five innings on May 2.

The Seahawks (9-2 NWC, 12-6) faced Burlington-Edison at Burlington on May 5 to determine which team would enter the district playoffs with the 2A first seed in the NWC in district competition. On Thursday, May 8, the ‘Hawks travel to Blaine to meet another NWC 2A rival.

(6 innings)

The Seahawks took a healthy 13-4 lead over Mount Baker before Mother Nature called down a deluge in the bottom of the inning, allowing the Mountaineers to score five runs in virtual darkness. As the downpour continued, the game was called.

“In the regular game, we were ahead 13-4 in the top of the sixth, but we were in the field when the sky darkened and we had to play defense in impossible conditions. We gave up five runs, but we survived and it was an important win for us. It clinched a first or second seed in the district playoffs,” said Anacortes coach Tom Swapp.

“We were swinging from the heels in this one,” Swapp said. “The speedsters and Sara Brennan and Rachel Nelson, our top five hitters, had 14 of our 20 hits.”

Hannah Brennan stroked a 260-foot triple, and Madison Bundy had five hits.

With several players in unfamiliar positions, the Seahawks committed four errors to pave the way to a 7-2 non-conference loss to the 3A Sedro-Woolley Cubs.

“Brewer is an outstanding pitcher,” Swapp said. “She throws harder than any pitcher in the conference. And she was hitting the edges against us. She was awfully tough.

“Still, we were in the game and conceivably could have won it if we hadn’t committed some uncharacteristic errors. Megan Dunton pitched a strong game for us. She deserved better support.”

Kayla Rieger stole four bases for the ‘Hawks, but failed to score because Brewer’s slants were handcuffing the RBI crew.

AHS 14, Friday Harbor 1
(5 innings)

The Seahawks invaded San Juan Island and made quick work of the 1A Friday Harbor fastpitch nine. With Megan Dunton limiting the Wolverines to three hits over the five-inning course of the game and her teammates poling 19 bingles, Anacortes cruised to a 14-1 win.

“Our power hitters, Sara Brennan and Rachel Nelson, flexed their muscles against Friday Harbor,” Swapp said. “Sara was four for four, hitting a home run, scoring four runs and driving in two. Rachel was three for four, with a homer, a double and four RBIs.

“Dunton pitched well and raised her record to four wins and two losses. She might start our game against Burlington.”

Sara Brennan took over the lead in Seahawk batting averages, raising her average to .459.

She leads the club with 33 RBIs. Rachel Nelson has 28 RBIs and Bellusci is second in hitting at .458.

Leadoff hitter Madison Bundy has an on-base percentage of .594.
