Nearly 40 students turned out for the Concrete track team this season — the most students ever for the spring sport. With two new co-coaches and a handful of state returnees, the Lions could make some noise in the Northwest 2B/1A League.

For the boys, Concrete returns senior boys’ captain Josh Meldrum, a mid-to-long distance runner and relay team member. Meldrum will be joined by senior hurdler Kory Lindgrin and thrower Luke Scherer as the team’s most experienced athletes, co-coach Ashley Howell said.

Key girls include senior girls’ captain Amanda Claybo, who will again run the 800 and 1,600 meters and join the relay squads. Paulina Stafford will again focus on the high jump and the hurdles this season, said Howell, an assistant coach for the Lions last year.

Since turnout has been so good, Howell said the team will participate in events it hasn’t had the numbers to do in years past, such as the triple jump.

Last year, the team took eight athletes to state, along with two alternates.

This year’s girls’ relay teams look to return to state after being disqualified during last year’s competition due to a poor exchange.

“Our two freshmen on the team are now sophomores, so I’m thinking that a little growth from them and they’ll make it,” Howell said.

Howell will be joined by co-coach Vanessa Williams to help give instruction to the large group.

“It’s going to be a great season,” Howell said. “We’re going to have tons of people in all kinds of events.”
