MOUNT VERNON — A big second inning Tuesday helped the Shorecrest baseball team end Sedro-Woolley’s season at the Northwest 3A District Tournament.

Leadoff batter Chad Morrison had a bases-clearing double to help power Shorecrest to a five-run second inning, and the Scots handed the Cubs a 10-2 loss.

Shorecrest grabbed a sizable lead in the second, when 10 batters came to the plate. Right fielder Alex Cain drew a bases-loaded walk and left fielder Stefan Orallo had a run-scoring single, but the big hit belonged to Morrison, who hit a deep drive over the left fielder’s head to bring home three runs.

“It was huge for us,” Shorecrest coach Alan Bruns said. “We’ve had our struggles offensively, so to score five is big.”

Shorecrest built a lead as large as nine runs, and the Cubs had difficulty cutting into it, partially thanks to the effort of Shorecrest ace James Robbins, who went four innings and struck out 10, allowing only one hit — a single to Klaye Kitchen with two outs in the fourth.

“He had great command of all his pitches and established his fastball, which allowed him to set up his off-speed and breaking balls,” Bruns said.

Robbins was an all-Western Conference South Division honorable mention pick last season.

Cain pitched the final three innings for the Scots (6-16 overall), a Class 3A team that spends most of its season playing in the 4A-heavy Western Conference South Division, which includes teams such as Jackson.

“They’re like jerky when they get to this tournament,” Sedro-Woolley coach Brad Conn said. “They’re tough.”

Sedro-Woolley’s two runs came on a two-run single by Nathan Regel, who was 2-for-4 for the Cubs (9-12).

Bobby Twedt Jr. went 1-for-4 with a double, and leadoff batter Ryan Morgan went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles.

Regel, Davis Kramer, Kurtis Armstrong and Michael Gribble all saw time on the mound for the Cubs.

Conn said the Cubs have plenty to be proud of this season, bouncing back to make districts after a season of nasty weather cut into their practice time and caused havoc with their schedule.

“I don’t know many people who thought we’d be in districts, but our effort in the last two games showed we belonged,” Conn said. “It’s going to be tough without (our seniors), but we have a good young team.”
