SEDRO-WOOLLEY — This time, Bryan Alexander is going to have the reins of the Sedro-Woolley football program all to himself.

Alexander has been tabbed as the school’s new head football coach, athletic director Todd Torgeson said Wednesday in a press release. The hire is pending approval from the Sedro-Woolley School Board, according to the release.

“Bryan has a very good understanding of the game of football and has developed a strong rapport with students, staff and community,” Torgeson said in the press release. “Bryan is a young, energetic coach and will be a great addition to our coaching staff.”

Alexander served as part of a co-head coaching arrangement with Dan Teeter for the 2004 season following the resignation of Dave Williams. Sedro-Woolley opened the job up after the season, eventually hiring Doug Preston. Alexander didn’t apply for the head job at that time.

“I’ve had more time, and I’m getting more experience, more confidence and getting ready to take this on,” Alexnader said. “I’m very excited. I’m chomping at the bit to get ready to go. I want to start building this program up to where I think it can be.”

Preston resigned after last season, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family. Alexander served as defensive coordinator under Preston for one year, then switched to offensive coordinator for the past two seasons.

“Bryan’s definitely ready,” Preston said. “I think he will do a great job. He put his time in. He’s been at the school close to 10 years. I think he’s ready to go. He’s got some ideas. He will need some time to implement them.”

Alexander has taught history and current world problems at Sedro-Woolley High School since 1997.

He graduated from Pacific Lutheran University in 1996.

Alexander’s challenge is turning around a program that has struggled mightily in recent years. Sedro-Woolley has posted just one winning record since 1998, and that came in the 2002 season. The Cubs are 10-39 since then.

“We have the kids that can be competitive,” Alexander said. “Once the staff is in place, we’re going to make football enjoyable.

“Hopefully that will get more players out, and we’ll play good football. Our focus is how to be a good teammate and good part of the community, to be a family.”
