CONCRETE — Seattle Lutheran’s hot start Tuesday ended the Concrete boys’ basketball team’s season.
Guard Tanner Larson scored 21 points to lead three Saints in double figures, and Seattle Lutheran scored 46 points in the first half on its way to a 75-59 victory over the Lions in a pig-tail game of the Bi-District 2B tournament.
The loss ends the season for a Lions team that has no seniors on its roster.
Larson hit two three-pointers and went 11-of-12 from the free-throw line to pace the Saints (13-9), who got 17 from Beau Severson and 12 from Reid Severson.
Beau Severson scored 10 points and had four rebounds in the first quarter to help the Saints to a sizable lead.
“We were trying to get the ball to the post,” Seattle Lutheran coach Jack Menashe said, referring to the 6-foot-1 Beau Severson and the 6-foot-0 Reid Severson. “They’ve been doing well and we tried to get the ball to them.”
J.B. Lusher came off the bench to add nine points and three rebounds.
The Saints also survived a 34-point effort from the Lions’ leading scorer, guard Chris Smith.
Smith hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 fourth-quarter points to cut into Seattle Lutheran’s lead. Smith was also perfect from the free-throw line, going 8-for-8.
“He’s quick and can go to the basket, but he’s also a good shooter as well,” Menashe said. “They did a good job getting screens for him, whether he had the ball or not.”
Kyler Howell added 12 points for the Lions, hitting a pair of 3-pointers. Daniel Schoolland led the Lions in rebounds with six.
Concrete coach Chad Dinkins said playing Seattle Lutheran was a good experience for the Lions.
“Our goal was to get into some kind of a playoff game this year, and we did that,” he said. “We were 0-20 two years ago, so this was a big step for us.”
Dinkins went on to say that, while the step was an important one for the Lions (4-17), he doesn’t think it will be the last one.
“They want a trip to Spokane,” he said, referring to the state tournament. “We’ve got another year, and now we’ve got a taste of it.”
Burlington-Edison Tigers 63
Anacortes Seahawks 49
ANACORTES — Evan Coulter scored 19 points, Jake Anderson had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and the Tigers pulled away from the Seahawks.
“They battled through and got a win on the road,” Burlington-Edison coach Rick Skeen said of his squad. “Anacortes played well and it was a close match most of the way.”
Mackenize Larkin scored 18 points to lead the Seahawks (5-7 in the Northwest Conference, 8-11 overall).
“There was about a five-minute stretch where we didn’t play well,” Anacortes coach Brent Senf said. “That’s when they pulled away.”
Burlington-Edison is 11-1 in conference and 17-2 overall.

Jackson Timberwolves 55
Oak Harbor Wildcats 53
MILL CREEK — Oak Harbor came up a few points short of a playoff upset.
Mietra Smollack scored 14 points and Jessica Denmon added 11 as the Wildcats lost to Jackson, the fourth-ranked Class 4A team in the state, in the first round of the Northwest 4A District Tournament.
University of Washington-bound Kristi Kingsman scored 34 points to lead the Timberwolves (21-1).
Oak Harbor fell to 14-8.
The Wildcats will play Edmonds-Woodway at 8 p.m. Thursday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School. Edmonds-Woodway lost to Snohomish 44-25 in its first-round game.
The top three teams from the eight-team district tournament advance to state.
Squalicum Storm 62
Sedro-Woolley Cubs 48
SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Keiana Clark had 19 points and had 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Cubs in the Northwest Conference game.
“We played real well up through the first half,” Sedro-Woolley coach Adolfo Hinojosa said, noting his team gave up too many second-chance points in the second half.
Cheyenne Best added 10 points, while Mollie Janicki scored eight for the Cubs (2-9 conference, 3-16 overall).
