CONCRETE — The Concrete wrestling team had seven champions on its way to winning the Northwest 2B/B District title Saturday.

The Lions outdistanced second-place Darrington and third-place La Conner in the six-team tournament.

Taking titles for Concrete were Caleb Thomas (112 pounds), Monte Benjamin (119), Joe Fallis (130), Chris Paxton (135), Cody Holt (152), Clyde Nunley (171) and Wayne Cress (189).

The top three wrestlers in each weight class advanced to next Saturday’s regional tournament.

Concrete had seven others make it through.

Dalton Dellinger (103), Colton Maloney (125), Derek Rice (145) and Josh Anderson (152) each finished second. James Martin (145), Tyler Dellinger (160) and Kevin Claybo (285) were third.

The Lions had five wrestlers battle the flu this week.

“You can just go right down the line. It hit us like the plague,” Concrete coach Dave Dellinger said. “For them being as sick as they were, they wrestled great.”

La Conner had its most regional qualifiers in school history — six through and five as alternates.

Matt Burlingame (160) and Pat Peth (171) were district runners-up, while Jeromy Travis (119), Dan Biladeau (130), Macky Zavala (140) and Brandon Drye (189) were each third.

LYNDEN — Burlington-Edison had three individual champions and qualified 10 through to next week’s regional tournament.

Enrique Medina (103), Juan Farias (112) and Manny Chavez (215) won their weight classes for the Tigers.

While Medina pinned all of his opponents, Farias won on all pins before winning on injury default in the finals.

Others to place in the top four to advance to regionals were Marco Ramirez (third at 119), Robert Campos (fourth at 125), Fabian Medina (third at 145), Corey Kleppe (third at 160), Beau Bridgman (second at 171), Barry Wise (second at 189) and Dion Wise (fourth at 189).

Bridgman was wrestling in his first varsity matches of the season.

Having suffered a knee injury during football season, he went into the district tournament with only four junior varsity matches under his belt to get him eligible for the postseason.

“It’s really exciting to see him back on the mat,” said Burlington-Edison coach Kirk Hamilton said.

“He can go as far as he wants to go.”

Anacortes had two wrestlers make it to the finals.

While Colby Wright defaulted to Farias in the 112-pound finals, Daniel Brown finished as runner-up at 125 pounds.

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Burlington-Edison had two champions on the way to winning the nine-team tournament.

Alysha Gash (160) and Anne Barnett (160-plus) won titles for the Tigers.

Burlington-Edison scored 216 points to runner-up Sedro-Woolley’s 183.

Sedro-Woolley had four champions — Kendra Wilson at 112 pounds, Jalysse Garcia at 119, Alysia Pohren at 125 and Jamie Randal at 145.

Sixteen Tigers and eight Cubs advance to the regional tournament next Saturday at Arlington.

MOUNT VERNON — Chris Smith scored a game-high 23 points, freshman Tyler Howell added 13 and the Concrete boys’ basketball team got a 66-47 Northwest 2B/1A League win Saturday over Mount Vernon Christian in a foul-filled game.

With the win, Concrete (3-7 league, 4-14 overall) put itself in good position to claim the league’s fourth seed and a pigtail Tri-District playoff game.

The game’s tempo was slowed by 63 fouls, Concrete coach Chad Dinkins said. The teams shot a combined 77 free throws. Despite the slow pace, Dinkins was pleased with the way his team played.

“I felt that we controlled the game pretty much throughout,” he said.

Andy Pritchard led the Hurricanes (1-9, 2-15) with 13.

EVERSON — Rich Skillman nearly matched Sedro-Woolley in scoring, pouring down 37 in the Northwest Conference contest.

“He did some amazing things on the floor,” Sedro-Woolley coach John Getzinger said. “He made shots that are extremely difficult. We obviously didn’t have an answer for him. We couldn’t do anything with him.”

The Brown brothers led Sedro-Woolley (0-8 conference, 3-13 overall) in scoring — Ethan and Isaac each tallied 13 for the Cubs, who struggled at 1-for-14 from 3-point range
“Isaac Brown had his best game of the season,” Getzinger said. “He’s only a freshman, but he’s starting to come around.”

MOUNT VERNON — Concrete made its free throws down the stretch to beat Mount Vernon Christian in the Northwest 2B/1A League game.

Concrete made 5-of-6 free throws down the stretch to ice the win.

“It was a good come-from-behind win,” said Concrete coach Kevik Rensink, whose team trailed by three points at halftime. “We needed it to keep moving foward toward districts.”

Beka Thomas led the Lions (4-6 league, 9-9 overall) with 14 points. Tasha Smith added 10 points and 14 rebounds. Stephanie Geertsma and Kylie Whitener led Mount Vernon Christian (0-10, 4-13) with 12 points apiece.

“I thought we played pretty well,” Hurricanes coach Dick Gudmunson said. “Obviously we didn’t win, and that’s disappointing on Senior Night, but we played pretty good basketball.”

SEDRO-WOOLLEY — Cheyenne Best scored nine points and Keiana Clark added eight for the Cubs in the Northwest Conference loss.

The Cubs (1-8 conference) struggled to find points, scoring just 15 points in the first three quarters.
