A season that started with great promise ended in disappointment as Anacortes lost a district play-in game 3-2 on April 29 at Volunteer Field.
A clutch two-run homer by Seahawk catcher Mark Medalia compensated for the two unearned runs surrendered earlier, but the South Whidbey Falcons snuffed the seventh-inning rally with a double play, ending Anacortes’ season.
“Marcus Abbott pitched well enough to win for us, giving up two unearned runs in seven innings. South Whidbey scored three in the top of the sixth, and we scored our two on a home run by freshman Mark Medalia in the bottom of the seventh. We ended up with two on and one out before a double play ended the game,” said Anacortes coach Pat Swapp.
“This was really a tough way to end the year. In high school baseball almost everyone ends the year on a losing note — that’s kind of how we have things set up, so it’s never easy, but we had worked our way into higher hopes,” said Swapp.
The underclassmen-laden Seahawks ended their season with an 8-11 overall record after concluding their Northwest Conference schedule with eight wins and five losses.
