Anacortes lost at Squalicum 6-1 on April 30 and to South Whidbey 7-0 in a rain-postponed meet on the school courts on May 2.

The Seahawks will send singles players Brianna Hobbs and Madison Campbell and the doubles teams of Leslie Baca and Sarah Koss, who were the first Anacortes doubles team to qualify for state last season, and Connie Grimnes and Monica Archer to the district tournament. The event begins at noon on Thursday, May 8 at Sehome and continues through Friday.

Squalicum 6, Anacortes 1

The number two doubles team of Connie Grimnes and Monica Archer saved the Seahawks from being shut out by winning their match easily at Squalicum.

“Our doubles turned in strong performances against some excellent Storm duos,” said Anacortes coach Jeff Thomas. “Connie and Monica played extremely well and gave up only three games in their match. Amy and Kasha faced an undefeated team and pushed them into a three-set match and Leslie and Sarah’s second set was a real battle, ending in a tiebreak.”

Singles: Hinton (S) d. Hobbs 6-0, 6-2; Wilson (S) d. Campbell 6-3, 6-0; Goodsell (S) d. Anderson 6-0, 6-1; Klees (S) d. Lycette 6-1, 6-0.

Doubles: Anne D’Aquino/Andra D’Aquino (S) d. Bacca/Koss 6-3, 7-6(3); Grimnes/Archer (A) d. Audrey D’Aquino/Grant/ 6-1, 6-2; Pennell/Morris (S) d. Cole/Krawczyk 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

S. Whidbey 7, Anacortes 0

Coach Thomas was encouraged by his team’s performance against a strong South Whidbey team, despite being bageled 7-0.

“First doubles was evenly matched and there was some great tennis exhibited by both groups,” Thomas said. “Second and third doubles matches were close as well.

“Madison Campbell played what was probably her best match of the season against a highly skilled opponent at second singles. Maddie was fantastic, as was Casey Anderson at third singles, who also turned in her strongest performance of the year.”

Singles: Newman (SW) d. Hobbs 6-0, 6-1; Wheeler (SW) d. Campbell 6-3, 6-2; Gemknow (SW) d. Anderson 1-6, 7-5, 1-0(7); Hough (SW) d. Lycette 6-2, 6-1.

Doubles: Comfort/Zalewski (SW) d. Baca/Koss 6-4, 7-6(6); Craig/Iversen (SW) d. Grimnes/Archer 7-5, 6-3; Stewart/Metz (SW) d. Cole/Krawczyk 6-2, 7-6(5).
