CONCRETE: Concrete’s community garden project is now underway thanks to a $4,000 Healthy Youth, Healthy Futures mini-grant awarded by School’s Out Washington. A product of the Imagine Concrete visioning group, the community garden is one piece of a larger community renaissance in this East County community.
Marla Reed of the Upper Valley Awareness Task Force, a coalition member of Skagit Prevention Council, suggested that Imagine Concrete could partner with the existing First Bloom afterschool program and other partners to initiate the first phase of the community garden. Written by Marjorie Bell of Skagit Prevention Council, the grant brings together multiple community partners to offer important afterschool opportunities for youth while engaging them in healthy outdoor activities.
Working with the existing First Bloom program offered through North Cascades National Park and 4-H, youth and community members will build phase 1 of the community garden this season including a fence and two raised beds made of reclaimed cedar. Other community partners include the Concrete School District, the Concrete Chamber of Commerce, the town of Concrete, United General Hospital, North Cascades National Park, Cooperative Extension 4-H, Upper Valley Awareness Task Force and Imagine Concrete.
Look for Concrete’s community garden this summer as you pass through this “Gateway to the North Cascades”.
