Free classes covering health and nutrition are being offered on Mondays in November and December by the Haggen Food & Pharmacy in Mount Vernon.
All classes are free of charge. Each class will last approximately 90 minutes and be conducted at the Mount Vernon Haggen store, 2601 E. Division St. Seating is limited and advance registration is recommended. To register, visit http://www.Haggen.com, call (360) 752-6485 or send an e-mail to .
The classes are led by Shelley Wallace, Whole Health Manager for Haggen stores. Wallace has a master’s degree in public health, is a certified nutritionist and is a registered dietitian with the American Dietetic Association.
Diabetes Part One: Participants will receive an overview of diabetes and its risk factors, as well as learning preventive action and complications that can arise from diabetes. The class is appropriate for those with a new diagnosis of diabetes or pre-diabetes, as well as those who are seeking a refresher course. Class time: 2 p.m. Nov. 2.
Diabetes Part Two: This class focuses on how people with diabetes can meet their nutritional needs while maintaining control of their blood-sugar level. The exchange system, plate system and carbohydrate counting will be discussed. Class time: 2 p.m. Nov. 9.
Diabetes Part Three: This class, led by Haggen pharmacist Mark Rock, will cover different medications and their functions, why a diabetic may be on several different medications and whether a diabetic can be weaned off medications. Questions are invited. Class time: 2 p.m. Nov. 16.
Achieving Your Best Weight: Two-thirds of Americans are overweight and billions are spent on weight-loss products and promises. This class will cover the best weight for each of us, how it affects health and appearance, how to reach an ideal weight through diet and lifestyle changes and steps to improve one’s overall health. Class time: 2 p.m. Nov. 23.
Gluten-free Diets: Celiac disease and gluten intolerance are increasingly common dietary concerns and the only treatment is a gluten-free diet. This class will over reading labels for a gluten-free diet, ensuring nutritional adequacy and resources. Class time: 2 p.m. Nov. 30.
Heart Health Part One: Although heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States, it is largely preventable. The class includes an overview of heart disease, risk factors that can be reduced and those that can’t, a summary of what various numbers related to heart health mean, and good eating guidelines for heart health. Class time: 2 p.m. Dec. 7.
Heart Health Part Two: This class covers changes that can be made to reduce one’s risk of heart disease. Participants will learn about possible dietary changes and receive information about fats, fiber and salt. Class time: 2 p.m. Dec. 14.
