Girl Scout Troop 40781 of Sedro-Woolley, recently visited the state capitol building in Olympia, where Gov. Christine Gregoire read a resolution declaring 2012 the “Year of the Girl” in Washington state.

Troop leaders Tammy Roberts and Judy Brock requested the designation in honor of the 100-year anniversary of Girl Scouts this year. Troop cadettes Caitlynn Brock, Valerie Jech, Iva Martinson and Mariah Martinson met with the senators.

Sedro-Woolley Mayor Mike Anderson also read the resolution Feb. 22 and declared 2012 as the Year of the Girl at the city council meeting. Anacortes Mayor Dean Maxwell also read the declaration March 5 and Burlington Mayor Steve Sexton read it March 8 to their respective city councils.

The Senate resolution was signed by all 49 senators, commending the Girl Scouts organization for its mission to raise girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.
