Frequently Asked Questions

What is an All Access Pass?

An All Access Pass gives you unlimited access to all content on our expanded goskagit.com site, including local news and information from the Skagit Valley Herald and premium content developed just for goskagit.com. This can be accessed via your desktop computer, tablet or mobile device. It also includes access to the Skagit Valley Herald E-Edition, an online replica of the daily newspaper. Full digital access is free for all current print and E-Edition subscribers. Subscribers can click the green button on this page to register for unlimited access. Nonsubscribers are limited to five metered stories every 30 days.

What is metered content?

Some content on the site remains free without limit, but some will be "metered" or counted as you view it on goskagit.com. You may view five metered stories every 30 days for free. Then you will be asked to subscribe.

What content will remain free and what will be metered?

Free: Our home page, breaking news and some local stories, obituaries, 360 entertainment stories, Associated Press stories, scrapbook items, education briefs, meeting notices, school honors, weather, lottery, prep sports scores, live games, photo galleries, videos, classified ads and Celebrations.

Subscriber and metered content: Most local news and feature stories, most local sports, blogs, police reports, letters to the editor, staff and guest columns, editorials, business coverage, Showcase, Home and Garden, health news and book reviews.

Some content is for subscribers only, such as special reports, sports agate, databases and interactives.

How can I tell what is subscriber content?

Look for the green All Access Pass icon next to metered subscriber content.

Why do I get only five stories free each month?

The Skagit Valley Herald and its weekly newspapers, like many other news organizations, charge for digital access so we may continue to invest in the quality journalism you expect. Some readers may not reach the limit, but we hope regular readers find the value in a subscription.

How do I keep track of how many pages I've read in a month?

A counter atop each story opened will tell you how many free ones remain.

If I already subscribe to print or the E-Edition, do I have to pay more for unlimited online access?

No. All current subscribers will need to simply register for an account on goskagit.com to access unlimited online content.

Is the Skagit Valley Herald E-Edition different than the goskagit website?

Yes. The E-Edition is an online reproduction of the printed newspaper in Flash format. E-Edition software allows users to view the newspaper as it was presented in print, turn the page, zoom in on text, search for stories and back issues and a variety of other functions. E-Edition access is included with a print or digital subscription.

Can I access my digital subscription on more than one computer, smartphone or tablet?

Yes, you can use your username and password to access goskagit.com at your home, at work, on the go, wherever. You can access our site on any browser, on any device.

What are my subscription options?

We offer three basic subscriptions: All-Access Pass: 7 days of the Skagit Valley Herald home delivered, plus full digital access for $13.87 per month*; full digital access plus Sunday edition of the Skagit Valley Herald home delivered for $10.84 per month*; or full digital-only access for $10.84 per month.* (Promotional rates quoted, are for EZ-Pay monthly deductions). Non-EZ-Pay rates are slightly higher. This offer is exclusive to new households which have not subscribed to the Skagit Valley Herald in the past 30 days. Home delivery only available to households in Skagit or Island County delivery areas. *Prices do not include activation fee of $5.99.

How are digital subscriptions billed?

We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and debit cards. Subscriptions are billed once per month. Your subscription will be renewed automatically, and you will be charged in advance of each billing cycle unless you cancel.

What is the cancellation and refund policy?

You may cancel your subscription at any time. When you cancel, the remaining balance on your account will be refunded to you, and your account will not be charged the following billing cycle. After your cancellation, you will be able to view five stories per month at no charge, like any other visitor.

Can I comment on stories without buying a subscription?

Yes, but for local stories, you will be limited to five pages per month without a subscription. The commenting area requires you to view the story first, which will count against your free page views each month.

Why should I have to pay for news?

We are Skagit County's best source for in-depth, accurate and timely local news, information and analysis. Other local websites may provide limited news bits or narrowly focused information, but we employ more professional journalists and news gatherers than any other in the county. The Skagit Valley Herald established itself more than 125 years ago to be the leading source of news and information in the area. We also remain the leading source for businesses to reach customers through advertising - both in our print products and with our digital presence. Our information and our reach into the community has value.

I am an advertiser on goskagit.com. How will this affect my ads?

The number of views, commonly referred to as "impressions," to your ad will not be reduced. When you purchase a certain number of impressions for your display ad, delivery of those impressions is guaranteed. Display advertising will still run on all pages throughout the site. So, this change to goskagit.com will not impact the effectiveness of your advertising. In fact, you may benefit by having a more engaged readership view your ads on an expanded, robust site.

How will this affect my classified ad?

All classified ads will still have unlimited free access by visitors to our site. This change to goskagit.com will not impact the effectiveness of your ad.

How do I subscribe?
