0320 roundabouts
Collisions have nearly quadrupled in the Sharpes Corner roundabout since it opened in June. All but a few of those collisions have been non-injury; advocates say that's because roundabouts slow vehicles down and eliminate cross-traffic.  (Richard Walker / Anacortes American)

Collisions at the Sharpes Corner and Howard’s Corner roundabouts on Highway 20 have increased substantially since they opened, according to data from the Anacortes Police Department, Washington State Patrol and Skagit County.

There were 47 vehicle collisions in the Sharpes Corner roundabout from when it opened June 23 to March 19. That’s up from up from 17 during the same time period before construction on the roundabout began, when Sharpes Corner was an intersection with a traffic light.
