The Anacortes City Council approved a 3 percent increase in residential and commercial trash rates Monday to offset a 9.3 percent increase in the rate the county charges the city to accept its refuse. The increase will be seen in the July bill. .
The monthly cost for a residential and commercial 21-gallon refuse container increases from $8.76 to $9.02; for a 32-gallon container, from $16.26 to $16.75. For a commercial 96-gallon container, the rate increases from $45.03 to $46.38.
Recycling container rates are unchanged.
Refuse drop box rates also increased. For a 10- or a 30-cubic-yard box, the monthly rate increases from $125.09 to $128.83; the delivery fee increases from $93.81 to $96.62; and the haul fee increases from $231.39 to $238.33 for a compactor box, and from $206.38 to $212.57 for a non-compactor box.
Rates also increased for temporary drop box delivery and removal; permanent and temporary refuse containers of 1.5 to 8 cubic yards; and assorted other fees, such as additional pickups, appliance pickup, and special hauls.
Councilman Matt Miller supported the increases but expressed concern that they would come as a surprise.
“It’s important that we communicate that to the public,” he said. “I think it seems fair; it seems we need to do this. But what’s going to happen is somebody’s going to see their bill and they’re going to say, ‘Hey, where did this come from?’”
Finance Director Steve Hoglund said notice of the proposed increases was posted on the city website and in the Anacortes American.
