Anacortes High School

Students at Anacortes High School will start 30 minutes later next year.

Anacortes high and middle school students will be going to school later next year after the school board unanimously passed new start times at its Feb. 21 meeting.

Anacortes Middle School will start at 8 a.m. and both high schools will start at 8:05 a.m. next year. That’s 30 minutes later than this year.

All elementary schools and Whitney Early Childhood Education Center will start between 9 and 9:10 a.m. The biggest change will be for Fidalgo Elementary School, which now starts at 8:15 a.m. and will start at 9 a.m. under the new proposal.

The decision comes after months of discussion, surveys of parents, teachers and students, and imput from the community.

The later start is a result of a parent peittion and research from the American Academy of Pediatrics stating that teens need more sleep.
