An Anacortes elementary school teacher was arrested Friday for investigation of child molestation.

The teacher from Island View Elementary School is being held on an Anacortes Police Department investigative hold in the Skagit County jail with three counts of child molestation in the first degree pending.

The police department and an Island View Elementary family notified the school district on June 17 about an incident based on a student report.

The district immediately put the teacher on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

“Student safety is our foremost priority, so we responded quickly,” Superintendent Mark Wenzel said in an email to district families.

A preliminary review by the district indicates no previous allegations of inappropriate behavior boundary invasions by that teacher, according to the email.

The district has policies in place and focused trainings about maintaining appropriate and safe professional boundaries with students, according to the email.

“We have specific, clear-cut guidelines about appropriate interactions between staff and students, as well as among students and enforce them consistently,” Wenzel wrote.

The district is cooperating with the police investigation and is conducting its own internal review.

“As a parent and educational leader, these kinds of situations are extremely difficult,” Wenzel wrote.
