Coach Leslie Mix said she expects good performances from the girls swim and dive team this year.

The Anacortes High School girls swim and dive team only has one senior this year, but coach Leslie Mix said the group should have strong finishers in league and district tournaments.

“There is a lot of returning talent, and the newcomers are helping the team be more well rounded,” she wrote in an email.

Key returners include Lindsay Brown (breaststroke, individual medley), Jazmyn Capron (freestyle, backstroke), Hailey Claridge (backstroke, freestyle), Emily Cox (backstroke, freestyle), Annaly Ellis (freestyle, backstroke, butterfly), Mica Gold (freestyle, breaststroke), Sabine Hambleton (freestyle, individual medley), Ella Martinez (backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle), Persephone Pestar (backstroke, freestyle), Cierra Rogers (freestyle, breaststroke) and Fiona Watkins (freestyle, individual medley).

Key newcomers are M.J. Anderson (diving, individual medley), Silvia Ellis (breaststroke, individual medley), Morgan Gudmundson (diving, freestyle, backstroke), Violet Holson (freestyle, backstroke), Ella Ocampo (backstroke, individual medley) and Isabella Zavala (freestyle, backstroke).

It’s been a joy to be back in the water, Mix said.

“It feels great to be at the pool with a wonderful group of people,” she wrote in an email. “They make my day with their willingness to work hard and help each other.”

Last season, the team competed by itself, recording times and comparing them with their opponents.

“I am looking forward to having in-person dual meets as well as championship meets again,” Mix wrote. “It is really nice to be back to an almost normal season.”
