Samish River fishing to close

Anglers cast their lines on the Samish River.

Time is running out to reel in fish from the Samish River.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife will close sections of the Samish River to all fishing Dec. 1. The river from the I-5 bridge to the Hickson Bridge will close Dec. 1. Another section from the river’s mouth to the I-5 bridge will close Jan. 1, essentially closing the entire river to fishing.

The reason for the closure is to reduce incidental hooking of wild steelhead, which are expected to return in numbers below escapement goals. Hatchery steelhead releases in the Samish River were discontinued in the spring of 2008.

The Samish River will reopen to fishing June 2, 2012.
