Boat fire

The Swinomish Tribal Police Department uses its boat Wednesday to help put out a fire on a crabbing vessel in the Swinomish Channel.

LA CONNER — A crabbing vessel caught fire Wednesday in the Swinomish Channel.

The boat’s engine caught fire about 2 p.m., Swinomish Tribal Police Chief Lou D’Amelio said.

A kayaker noticed the burning boat in the middle of the channel and paddled out to aid the its sole occupant, who was able to swim to the kayak and be brought to shore, D’Amelio said.

No injures were reported.

The Swinomish Tribal Police Department and the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office responded with boats and were able to extinguish the blaze, D’Amelio said.

Skagit County Fire District 13 also responded.

The boat had minimal fuel on board, D’Amelio said, and poses no risk to the local ecosystem. The Coast Guard and state Department of Ecology responded to the scene to monitor the boat’s removal.
