MOUNT VERNON — With early results in, incumbent Dave Hayes is leading challenger Doris Brevoort in the race for Legislative District 10 position 2 in the state House of Representatives.

In Skagit County, Hayes is leading Brevoort with nearly 55 percent of the vote.

Throughout the district, which covers Skagit, Island and Snohomish counties, Hayes remains in the lead, with about 57 percent of the vote.

“I’m very happy with the early numbers,” Hayes said.

Hayes, R-Camano Island, has held the position since 2013.

While Brevoort, a longtime educator, lagged behind him in the polls, Hayes said he appreciated the campaign his Democratic opponent ran.

“Probably the biggest thing I have to say is that we focused on issues,” he said. “It was very amicable, and we talked about the issues that are important to our district.”

An estimated 15,000 ballots remain to be counted, according to the Skagit County Auditor’s Office. The next count will be released Thursday.
