Ben Rozema's hat trick was the highlight of a big week for the Mount Vernon Christian high school boys' soccer standout.

It caught notice.

Rozema was named MaxPreps/United Soccer Coaches Association Player of the Week for Washington state after a week that included a goal in a 4-0 win over Coupeville on Sept. 7 and a hat trick against Grace Academy on Sept. 10.

Rozema is a junior for the Hurricanes, who were 3-1 through Wednesday.

Teams land in coaches' poll

Two Skagit County volleyball teams started off in impressive positions in the first Washington State Volleyball Coaches' Association poll of the season.

La Conner is the top-ranked Class 2B team in the state, and Burlington-Edison is tied for second among Class 2A teams.

The Braves won the last two Class 2B state titles in 2018 and 2019. They're ahead of No. 2 Colfax and No. 3 Kalama in the poll.

Burlington-Edison is tied with Washington for second in the poll, while Ridgefield is the top-ranked team.
