MOUNT VERNON — Mount Vernon police are investigating the shooting death of a 37-year-old man that occurred early Sunday morning at a Stanford Drive apartment.

Police responded about 5:30 a.m. to a 911 call for medical aid. When they arrived, CPR was being administered on the man.

The man was found to have a gunshot wound to his upper torso and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a news release.

Investigators spent most of the day Sunday at the crime scene — securing evidence, canvassing the neighborhood and interviewing witnesses. Criminal Investigations Lt. Mike Moore said a gun was recovered at the scene.

“At this time we don’t believe there’s a risk to anybody else in the public,” Moore said. “The event was isolated to the people that were involved in the place they were involved at.”

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Mount Vernon Police Department at 360-336-6271 or 360-428-3211.
