MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon Police Department is investigating the death of an inmate at the Skagit County Community Justice Center.
About 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, corrections deputies inside the jail called 911 after a 50-year-old woman complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing, Mount Vernon Lt. Greg Booth said in a news release.
As deputies were taking her to the jail’s medical unit, the woman collapsed, Booth said.
Deputies performed CPR and medical units arrived, but the woman was not able to be revived, he said.
Following standard procedure when an inmate dies in custody, the Skagit County Sheriff’s Office requested the Mount Vernon Police Department handle the investigation.
After interviewing staff and about 30 incarcerated women, detectives learned the woman had several medical conditions and was being treated with numerous medications, Booth said.
The Skagit County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the manner of death, Booth said.
