Obamacare is a hotly debated topic. Surprisingly, not everyone is aware that this is a misnomer for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which serves Republicans, Independents, Democrats and those with no interest whatsoever in politics.
It serves people in need of health care, which we will all need at some point in our lives. Do you get regular preventive care checkups? Know of a child with a disability? Will anyone in your family need nursing home care? Do you or family members have any pre-existing conditions (i.e., diabetes, COPD, cancer, CHF, arthritis, MS, heart disease or many others)?
Repeal without first having a replacement will have disastrous effects, potentially directly affecting you or those your love. Washington currently has approximately 750,000 residents relying on the ACA, and 30 million are covered nationwide.
If this act is repealed without a suitable replacement, many of these people will lose healthcare coverage. People with pre-existing conditions could be denied treatment or life-saving measures. Funds to hospitals will drop dramatically, affecting surrounding communities and likely result in unemployment for many.
You, or someone you know will directly be affected. Get informed. Get involved. Urge legislators to delay "repeal" until we have a "replacement" to take effect. Otherwise the fallout will be widespread.
As singer Joni Mitchell said, "You don't know what you've got till it's gone."
