CIFR teaching CPR

Gay Kirkpatrick, left, and Lisa Waite learn hands-only CPR on Thursday outside the Camano IGA.

Camano Island Fire Department is holding an open house — 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Terry’s Corner Fire Station, 525 E. North Camano Drive, Camano Island. Rain or shine, staff and firefighters will help people learn about the fire department and say “Thank You” for their support. Free hot dogs, chips and drinks will be offered, starting at 10:30 a.m.

They’ll offer fire prevention tips and disaster preparation information from the Camano Preparedness Group as well as free emergency medical information kits. People can learn CPR basics in only 10 minutes. Demonstrations of firefighting equipment and skills are planned throughout the day.

High School Cadet Academy members and volunteer firefighters will lead children’s games. “Junior firefighters” can try out a fire hose on the popular mini house with pretend flames. The department’s mascot, Sparky the Fire Dog, will be woofing about. Kids’ T-shirts will be for sale to support various public education programs.

American Red Cross, Island County 911 Dispatch, Island County Sheriff’s Office, Citizen Patrol and Citizens for Camano Island Fire & Rescue will display information.
