It’s time for Stanwood and Camano residents to head over to the 55+ Resource Fair. Camano Center and Island Senior Resources are hosting the fair from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Camano Center, 606 Arrowhead Road, Camano Island.

Organizer Karen Conway said 50 or more representatives will offer information about government and other nonprofit services, such as local transportation options, medical services, specialty products, support groups, public safety, senior living options, health and wellness, and legal or financial services.

“The goal of this annual event is to have one convenient place for people to come and get information about services, programs and activities tailored to the 55 and over age group,” she said.

Fair-goers can find resources for exercise, estate planning, leisure, volunteer opportunities and more, especially for people age 55 and older – or younger – and learn the latest about AARP’s Smart Driver Safety Programs or property taxes from the Island County Assessor. Talk to representatives from the food bank, backyard wildlife, CASA animal shelter, school district and U.S. Census Bureau.

Four hour-long presentations with guest speakers are scheduled:

• 9:45 a.m. Benefits for Veterans. Leslie O’Bannon, veterans service officer with American Legion Post 92 in Stanwood, will discuss compensation, pensions, financial aid and other benefits for veterans.

• 11 a.m. A Candid Conversation with Your Commissioner. Janet St. Clair, Island County Commissioner District 3, will talk with residents and answer questions.

• 12:15 p.m. Medicare Overview. John Russell, a State Health Insurance Benefits Advisor (SHIBA), will present an overview of Medicare then answer questions.

• 1:30 p.m. Estate and Care Planning for Seniors and Their Families. James Dolan, elder law attorney, will describe ways for seniors and their families to manage their estate and plan for health care.

Lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. is free; seniors can enjoy green salad, quiche, fruit and dessert with beverages, courtesy of sponsors Island Senior Resources, IRG Physical Therapy, Josephine Caring Community, Stanwood Hearing, Safety Line, Skagit Regional Health, A Better Solution In-Home Care, Northwestern Mutual and Crest View/Hemmingsen Elder Care Inc.
