“Give thanks to the God of heaven, for his steadfast love endures forever.” — Psalm 136:26

I serve as a Navy chaplain currently assigned to the U.S. Coast Guard. I was recently called to our local children’s hospital to support a family who had just experienced an unthinkable tragedy.

The spouse of one of our Coast Guard members in northern California collapsed while at work. She was five months pregnant and, because she could not be revived, the decision was made to do an emergency C-section.

The tiny baby girl weighed just over one pound. She was flown the next day to a children’s hospital here in Oakland where she was admitted to the neo-natal ICU. Despite the heroic efforts of the medical staff, it became clear that the baby just wasn’t far enough along.

In offering prayer and support for the family at the NICU, I observed the father, grandparents, family members and friends offer amazing love and tender care for tiny Charlotte. She was surrounded by love.

As they took turns holding her during her final hours on Earth, I was reminded how in our most desperate times of need we are likewise surrounded by God’s unconditional love and care.

Apostle Paul in the New Testament reminds us that “nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus.” No matter what trial or sadness you are experiencing, know that God’s love and forgiveness surrounds you and will never forsake you. You are never alone.

“The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” — Zephaniah 3:17
