SEATTLE — Anacortes tennis player Luke Rutz waited a long time to play in the Class 2A State Tournament.
So far, it’s been worth the wait.
After qualifying for the tournament in the fall, Rutz advanced to the semifinals with two wins Friday at Nordstrom Tennis Center at the University of Washington.
Rutz beat Louis Merred of Quincy 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round, then downed Garrett Lawson of Bremerton 7-5, 6-4. He’ll face Sammamish’s Josh Chou in the semifinals on Saturday.
Friday’s results underlined the competitive difficulty of the Northwest Bi-District that Rutz emerged from in the fall; of the four semifinalists, three are from that district, including Rutz, his opponent and Shane Lynette of Sehome.

SEATTLE — A singles player from Burlington-Edison and a doubles team from Sedro-Woolley have something in common: Both are in the running for a fourth-place finish on Saturday after Friday’s action at the University of Washington.
Sedro-Woolley’s Anna Rutherford and Maya Becerra won their first-round matchup with Othello’s Alyssa Freeman and Janeisse Alvarez 6-4, 6-4. Then they lost to Sophia Koelsch and Abby Bond of Tumwater, 7-6(4), 6-1.
If Rutherford and Becerra win Saturday’s matchup with Stella Fosberg and Chloe Watson of Highline, they’ll play for fourth place later in the day.
Burlington-Edison’s Lyndsee Fleury had a similar path. Fleury beat Carissa Kaut of Centralia 6-4, 7-6, then lost her second-round matchup to Foster’s Ana Rios, who won 6-0, 6-1. Fleury will play Selah’s Mary-Frances Ballew on Saturday; a win sends her to the fourth-place match.
